Hernandez, a Bayonne resident, died on Wednesday, June 7, at the age of 35. A fundraiser has been set up to assist her funeral expenses.
As of Wednesday, June 14, more than $11,000 has been raised.
"Ever since I met her, I knew how big of a heart she had," said Jordan Hernandez, who organized the fundraiser. "Ellie was a caretaker of all who came into her life."
Hernandez also had a passion for children and worked at the River School in Jersey City.
"Everyone who knew Ellie is going to miss her greatly," Jordan writes on the campaign. "We love you Ellie, you were the best big sis anyone could ask for."
Hernandez is survived by her parents, Roberta and Sebastian, her boyfriend, Raul, her two sisters, Llane and Lucia and two nephews. She will be buried at Cementerio Municipal de Ilamacingo, Acatlan de Osorio in Puebla, Mexico.
